How to choose window treatments for the kitchen

As trends and influences come and go, one of the quickest and most inexpensive ways of revamping your kitchen to keep abreast with seasonal looks is to update your window dressings. But with so many different choices available it can be hard to narrow down the options. All window treatments generally have to satisfy three key elements, privacy, practicality and personal style. Those for the kitchen need the added consideration of durability, since humidity, cooking splatters, and cooking aromas can all shorten the life of your window coverings.

So, it may sound ‘blindingly’ obvious but a good starting point is to really think about any specific jobs they need to do.

Roller blinds

Perhaps you have a pretty view you want to make the most of and prefer a simple treatment like a roller blind that rolls up neatly out of the way. has a fantastic choice of plain and patterned fabrics at such reasonable prices you could almost change your blind with the season!

Roman blinds

Alternatively you may want to make a feature of your window dressing with an attractive roman blind in a colourful print. Hillarys latest collection includes all sorts of fabulous designs and because they’ll bring the samples book to you, it takes the guesswork out of matching colours to your scheme. They’ll measure and fit too!

Faux wood blinds

Faux wood venetian blinds that look like wood but behave like PVC are another great option for kitchens as they’re flame retardant, moisture resistant and easy to wipe clean. Painted faux wood is another great option as in the UK, our weather tends to be a bit on the grey side and daylight can lack the clarity and brightness of warmer climates. This is why painted wood has become so popular as we try to lighten up our homes with pale colours.

It’s worth taking a peek at and perhaps requesting a sample slat or two.

Vertical blinds

Vertical blinds also make great practical sense in the kitchen as many fabrics are Teflon coated, moisture resistant and easily wiped clean.

Or you could add a touch of luxury and café style chic with some fabulous shutters. Hillarys made-to-measure craftwood shutters are the most affordable route to shutter style or you could even opt to have shutters painted to match your scheme whether it’s out-there orange or muted mauve!

Teflon coated Roller blinds

Avoid any kitchen sink dramas with a waterproof blind. Think about a roller blind in a fabric which is Teflon coated and mould-resistant or a PVC fabric which is moisture resistant and wipeable. Hillarys has just launched a new rollers collection that includes six Teflon coated and two PVC fabrics.
