The kitchen has been and always will be the heart and soul of the home and in most families, it’s the place where everybody and sometimes, everything, ends up! There’s certainly something wonderful and reassuring about the atmosphere that a cosy, inviting kitchen creates within a home.
As our lives get increasingly hectic, expansive, open plan living spaces are rapidly gaining in popularity and are how we want to live. They suit our busy lifestyles where convenience and sociability are so important. And rather than move, many people are choosing to adjust their current property into their dream home and knocking down walls to blend their living, cooking and eating spaces into one.
As those spaces blur so do traditional decorating choices. Anything goes. Mix it up. Wallpaper and curtains can work in kitchens, stone tiles look great in dining rooms. It is worth bearing in mind though that your kitchen or kitchen / diner is the area of your home with the highest levels of traffic and so it needs to be low maintenance, particularly if you have children. So best to veer away from carpets, opt for wipeable paints and make sure that sofas can be wiped down or have removeable covers.
A quick and easy way to add colour, define zones or simply ring the changes is with lovely window dressings. They can co-ordinate with your existing décor or work with accent colours to either blend in or stand out as an attractive contrast.
